Anyone know how to cure demodectic mange?
My puppy is about 12 weeks old and she has demodectic mange it had been pass by her mother. Not really sure on what to do for her so maybe you guys can help. Maybe some of you have been though the same thing. Thanks for your help.
demodectic mange is a mite that naturally occurs on all dogs. some dogs when under stress or in a new environement will have an overpopulation of this mite and have hair loss. the tendancy of this can be genetic, but it’s not specifically something she “caught” from her mother. it is best treated under a veterinarians supervision and direction. ivermectin is often the drug of choice but you are better to get the dose from a vet. many vet will also use an antibiotic to help the dog from getting secondary infections also. since this is a sign of a weakened immune system. it is successfully treated in most cases. but i would start at your vet for further treatment.

Sarcoptic Mange

Ivormectin for Demodectic mange?
My puppy got demodectic mange and the vet prescribed him Ivormectin last tuesday, I give him 1 cc a day, for 30 days, it’s almost been 2 weeks and he’s just losing more hair in more spots, should i keep him on it for the 30 days until I go back, or go back this monday when the same vet will be there?
It takes a while. Ivermectin injections seem to work more quickly, but they can’t be administered to very young critters, as I suspect your puppy is.
Certainly though, if the mange seems to be getting worse, bring your puppy in for a check up. It is always, when it comes to animals health, better to be safe than sorry.

do you think this is sarcoptic mange and how do you treat it?
Well my vet won’t treat it until the slide results come back in 2 weeks.
My dogs are itching constantly and their hair is falling out on their ears and backs of their front legs. They are also itching their chest. Their skin is scaley.
I don’t want to wait 2 weeks to treat them so I’m trying home remedies in the meantime. I’m already using gentian violet (antifungal) and put vitamin E liquid on the scaley skin, but so far it’s not helping.
Please any suggestions because I am tempted to just go to another vet but my current vet said the reason he doens’t just want to treat it is because the medicine is harsh and he wants to be sure it’s sarcoptic mange or another fungal infection.

When he first checked the skin scrape right after he did it, he said all he saw was normal skin bacteria (staph i think) but then a few days later he said the slide changed colors and was fungal..i don’t understand why he can’t take a hair sand check for mites or something! and Ms. Manners…Im not sure..on my heels there are little bumps that look like poison ivy or mosquitoe bites but I do go walking through woods and fields so it could really be poison ivy. it itches but not terrible like my dogs are itching.
and my dogs don’t have little bumps, theirs is just like really scaley scabby skin and hair loss

thank you for the link Jessie. ok if my vet doesn’t call me back by today (i called friday) i’ll see a new vet because I really think this is what it is..and if the treatment won’t hurt them i think that’s better than letting them scratch themselves raw, it just looks so uncomfortable for them
He hasn’t returned my call…I think he’s mad that I never picked up the antibiotics for my other dog, but i don’t want her on them if there’s no bacteria infection.
If it is sarcoptic mange, you are dealing with a mite, and there is no effective home treatment.
I know itching dogs are driving you nuts, but wait for his diagnosis.
(I dont know why it would take 2 weeks to diagnose sarcoptic mange….maybe they have to culture the fungus to eliminate that possibility).
Are you seeing any bites on you?
I know my mother was bitten by the mites when her dogs had sarcoptic mange.
That would be a clear indication that you are dealing with mange.

Sometimes a vet will just treat the dog for sarcoptic mange in order to eliminate it as a possibility. Why dont you ask him if he would be willing to do that?

what is the mange and how do i get rid of it on my dogs and puppies?
I’ve had them dipped and gave them meds from the vet and no improvement. I’ve had to have 2 put to sleep because I could not get rid of the mange, no matter how I treated them.
Mange is a skin disease caused by parasitic mites. There are two common types (demodectic and sarcoptic) and a few others which are less common.
You get rid of them by having the vet take a skin scraping and identify the type of mites, and prescribe treatment. If the initial treatment does not work, you TAKE THEM BACK. Demodectic mange especially is very hard to get rid of, because it accompanies an immune system that is surpressed. It can take months and months of consistent treatment to get rid of it, and the dog can relapse later on when subjected to stress or illness. Any dog that produced a puppy with demodectic mange or has had symptomatic demodectic mange themselves should be altered and not bred as there’s a genetic component to the immune system impairment. Sarcoptic mange is generally easier to treat, but it’s HIGHLY contagious to other dogs, and to people.
So, what I’m saying is: You need to take them all back to the vet for further treatment. If you don’t feel your current vet is treating them adequately, use a different vet. But get them help, It’s very itchy and painful.

Can my cats get mange from a dog that was at my house?
This girl i know told me she was bringing her dog over, she brings it here, has it on my bed and all over in my room. then tells me she thinks it has mange. i have other cats in the house and im worried about the areas the dog was laying and whatnot. are my cats at risk here? what precautions should i take to make sure they dont get mange?
You really don’t know what the dog has, so you don’t know if your cats are at risk or not. There area certain types of mange that cats can get (sarcoptic??). Can you get Revolution in Singapore? That is an off-label treatment for many types of bugs – it’s listed as preventing bites from fleas, mites, mosquitoes, and certain internal parasites, but is also effective against ticks and other ‘bugs’. I’d also be washing (in very hot water) my bedspread and bedding 
If you can’t get Revolution, ask the vet for advice about what sorts of dips you can get for your cats. This is really a case of prevention, but it’s a whole lot easier to prevent potentially communicable diseases than to treat them in a multi-cat household after the fact.
