Demodectic Mange? Has your dog had this?

I have been going back and forth to the vet with what we thought were food allergies. I take her back at 7:30 in the morning and I think I my have diagnosed my dog so the vet can finally treat her. I got my APBT at the shelter on June 12th, and June 20th she had 8 pups. What i have read about demodectic “red” mange, is that all dogs are born with this mite but some dogs are more likely to have on out break. Like an immune-suppressive hormone imbalance, like heat, pregnancy, or nursing. Can anyone tell me about the treatment? She has it in her paws, Demodectic Pododermatitis, which is said to be the hardest area to treat. She also has it on her face and back. So, do you know what treatment is like, how long does treatment take, and is she likely to get this skin condition over and over. I will be dropping her off at the vet in the morning at 7:30. Just wanted a little heads up if anyone can help. Thank you.
I just adopted her in mid june, took her staight to the vet and he said that spaying her could cause complications because she was so far in her pregnancy. I did not know she was pregnant when i brought her home due to the fact she was so thin from being on the streets. Or thin for a pregnant dog, she actually look normal. The shelter gave me an extention on the spay until the pups are weaned, and i will get her spayed as soo as the vet gives the go ahead. Also, she did not get any of her shots, he said we had to wait on that too.
@ Shanna- Thank you, I was wondering if everyone was answering questions about what to name their peek-a-poos. I appreciate your knowledge and will post what the vet said in this question tomorrow.
I dropped her off about an hour ago. So im hoping to know the results by lunch. I didn’t take in any of the pups. They said they will tell me if i need to bring them in but so far i don’t see any signs in them. The one thing that concerns me is that one of the pups has a small white csyst on his lip. Im going to take him so the vet can look at him when i pick my girl up.
I just got back from the vet and they did not fin any Demodex on her. She said that when they first saw her that bith of the vets said she had demodectic mange. After doing several scrapes they found no demodex. They are stumped. They put her on antibiotis in case of bacterial infection, Promeris for demodex even though they didn’t find any they are not completely ruling it out, and Malaseb a medicated shampoo for her skin. If she is not better in two weeks they are going to run some more tests and try some steroids. So if you have any more suggestions please e-mail me. thank you.

Since demodectic mange is primarily an immune issue, it can be treated several different ways depending on the severity and health of the animal. I have had fosters with mild demodex mange that recover with nothing other than a healthy diet of holistic kibble and skin ointment. I’ve had others that required many dips or lengthy treatments with ivermectin.
How likely she is to get it again depends entirely on her and her health. It’s not likely that she’d get it again with a good diet and such but it’s not impossible.
Make sure whatever you are feeding her is good quality…..no corn, wheat, soy or by-products. Diet is very important when dealing with an immune deficient dog.

Added: You are smart to wait on shots and spaying. You don’t want to upset the dog’s immune system anymore, so wait until the mange is completely gone before stressing her system anymore with immunizations and spay surgery.

How many cats can a person legally own? When does someone legally have to many cats?

Okay here is the problem. My neighbor is this idealistic person who thinks she can save every stray animal herself. I am all for rescuing animals, please don’t think I am heartless. I myself resuced a minature pinshcer who was going to be put to sleep. But there are sometimes when you have too many animals. So when is the number of cats someone owns too many? The problem is right now my front yard smells like cat poop because some cat had diarehea last night and went all over my yard. It is also all over my sidewalk. About a month ago I found a dead kitten decaying in my landscaping rocks and some of these cats look like they have mange or other helath issues. She also has two dogs that she allows to run free all over the area and another dog she keeps in a pen. I am tired of cleaning up after someone else’s cats. I am tired of getting out of my car to coax her dog out of the road. Does anybody have any suggestions about who to call or what to do?

Heather

Call animal control. My idiot neighbor used to put milk out for strays and one day I counted 23 cats in her driveway. She was given 2 tickets for $1500 each, yes fifteen hundred dollars for not having them on leashes, no rabies shots and no county registration. This is after I caught 15 on night in my yard in a live animal trap. Mr. Kitty and I took a road trip and I dropped them off 10 miles from home. Apparently none of them had MapQuest since I have never seen them back again.

Does anyone know a cure for demodectic mange?

My 8 month pit bull has been in and out of the vet for the last couple months getting mitaban dips and ivomec shots and nothing seems to cure her. I’ve read about a borax and peroxide mix (does anyone know exact measurements for that?) that can cure mange but does anyone know of anything else? Please don’t tell me to consult a veternarian-done that and nothing they can give me works! She used to be all white and now its more like all red with big patches of hair missing…PLEASS HELP!-I’ll try anything!

Nothing topical will work as the mites live right down in the hair follicle.

A daily dose of oral ivomec for several weeks will work and the spot-on treatment Advocate is listed as a demodex treatment. According to their blurb demedicosis has been cured in clinical trials.

It is important to try and get rid of this condition before it becomes generalised. It can be hard to treat once the dog’s condition becomes chronic. If it is really red there could be a secondary infection – has the dog had antibiotics for this?

Mange mites are present on most dogs in small amounts. It is only when they multiply that they can cause problems. This is often at times of suppressed immunity – puppyhood, old age, ill health etc. Have you thought about changing your dog’s diet (assuming that you feed commercial food) to something more natural? Many people report that their dogs’ natural immunity is increased after changing them to a raw diet without all the inappropriate ingredients that are in commercial foods.

My 3 year old shih tzu had generalized demodec mange, been snipped, dipped, shot, on prednisone returns??

She is on a good food, nutro max. Vitamin E/Selenium, C & Amino Acids, it get’s better then flares up again. I’m really looking for a home rememdy. No more toxic dips & cortisone if I can help it
She has been tested first by the Vet the Rescue used, they said it was a bad case of Fle Infestation let go, My Vet then did a scraping said demo Mange In Oct. I’ve got a few very good books asnd researched plenty…So, I took her off the steroids almost immeadiately.Although one of my books does say in SOME cases this is the only thing that will help…If you use a low dose. Today her skin is red, I’m using Aloe from my plants. Wit’s end here, any idea what may help relieve her skin? She has been to the Vet sooooo many times, I’ve lost faith. From Holistic to conventional, could be impossible to clear up? My Vet said she has put down more Shih Tzu’s due to skin issues, I just don’t want to make her suffer if she is never going to get better….;( We have stuck to every treatment giving it a chance, other than prednisone because of her immune system. It’s very sad & today I just feel so so bad for her….

First of all, if your dog really does have generalized demodex- IT SHOULD NEVER GET A STEROID OF ANY KIND! Every dog has the demodex mite present in it’s skin, some dogs just fight it off better. Giving steroids to a dog suppresses the immune system and therefore they cannot fight off the mite. If your vet prescribed steroids while treating for mange, get a new vet. Unfortunately, there are no holistic remedies to fight the mite. Oral ivermectin daily, once weekly dips with mitaban/amitraz or if it is localized you can use goodwinol ointment. We have had some luck by applying Revolution twice a month until the skin is cleared up again. Keep with it- I have had to treat several older patients for over two years before we finally got a handle on it.

My Pomeranian has sarcoptic mange from breeders!?

I took my 8 week old pom to the vet cause she was scratching and losing hair, and found out she has sarcoptic mange. I showed the vet a rash I have developed since I have had her and he said I have it to, that it is very contagious to humans. I went to my doc and got cream, and the pup and my other dog are being treated now. The pup is miserable and in a playpen in my room, with her bed and food and water and I clean the playpen 2x day and change her piddle pad, but she wants so bad for me to hold her! She cried constantly for attention. I don’t want to pick her up for a week, until her next treatment, when the vet said she should no longer be contagious. Can anyone recommed something to soothe her, while she is in "isolation"? I do go in and talk to her but limit my time in the room with her, becuase I am afraid of being re-infected! (i have held her for a couple of min and then put my clothes in washer and take a shower, but only hold her for a couple of mins.) Thanks!
Thanks so much to the first two reponders, your answers were very heartfelt and sincerely appreciated!

I think this is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever seen on this site. You have my sympathy now, seriously. Your breeder should be shot and then eaten by rabid wolverines for being so irresponsible.

This is such a tough situation for both of you. You can perhaps try to put an article of clothing with your scent on it, but nothing’s really going to be a substitute for your arms or physical presence. You can also try a loudly ticking clock or a radio so she doesn’t feel quite so alone.

Will pray for you and your puppy to get better very soon. Good luck.

Are there any immunity boosters for a puppy with demodectic mange?

I have a puppy who has mange so bad that her face looks like a Halloween mask. We are using the mite dip but it pains me to look at her. I am surprised that the veterinary world has not come up with a vaccine for mange or an effective mange treatment.

Demodex in pups usually clears up on its own even without a  mange treatment. His own immune system will catch up and learn to deal with it. You worry about demodex when it strikes an adult because that’s very rare, but it’s fairly common for puppies. All dogs have demodex mites, but not all have full immunity from birth. Pups also experience some immunity gaps when they are weaned and receive their first two sets of shots which challenge their systems to get them producing antibodies. Your pup already has the mites (they all do) so a vaccine wouldn’t do anything but make things worse.

Vaccines don’t work by giving the dog protection directly, but by challenging the dog’s own immune system to force it to produce antibodies of its own. Your pup’s system is already being challenged and is already learning to fight back.

Two of my dogs had minor breakouts as puppies. For those two, it was all over in a couple of weeks, the fur was back, and there was no lasting sign it had ever happened. If it’s more than on the eye lids and lips, then you do need to visit the vet, or if it lasts more than a couple of weeks.

I just use PetsBestRx as a  mange treatment and it has always turned out fine for me.

Can cats get the mange and what are the symptoms?

I have 3 cats they are all fixed and get their shots regularly and they seem healthy. However, there is a cat that one of my neighbors moved off and left that I feed. The neighbors that left it come and put food out for it every once in awhile but they are elderly and they don’t ever put enough food out for it. It gets in fights all the time with other neighborhood cats and my grandfather said it looked like it had the mange. I don’t want my cats to get it too. I don’t know what to do. I can barely afford to take my own cats to the vet. I hate to call animal control because the neighbors still own the cat, but I will if It comes down to it. What are the symptoms of mange and can cats get it?

Mange is an infestation of mites. While it is more commonly seen in dogs, cats can: and indeed do get mange.

Basically there are two different types of mange: Sarcoptic mange caused by sarcoptic mites and Demodectic mange caused by demodex mites.

Symptoms include:

Patches of hairloss on the skin, redness, swelling and overall irritation. Demodectic mange is usually found in the facial and ear areas of the animal, while Sarcoptic can be found anywhere in the body.

Another fungal infection that could be causing problems is ringworm. It typically exhibits the same kinds of symptoms although not throughout the body.

Sarcoptic mange is also very contagious between animals and ringworm can be transferred to humans.

If the animal does have mange:

By not-treating the problem the owner is actually comitting an act of animal cruelty through neglect.

However; the SPCA is also aware that elderly people have a really hard time getting around in some cases and won’t always prosecute.

If you decide to call, ask if you can bring the cat in yourself and if they would be willing to treat the animal and return it to the old lady.

You may also want to talk to her personally before filing. She may be medically incapable of taking this animal to a vet, and you could offer to help take it to the veterinarian for her.

Hope this helps!

Edit:

I should also state that the diagnosis of mange/ringworm is done through a skin scraping analysis. Basically a veterinarian will scrape off a tiny portion under the skin and check for the mites/bacteria under a microscope.

Generally demodex mites are long/narrow looking microscopically, while sarcoptic mites are rounder and more oval shaped.

After the skin scraping analysis is done, the veterinarian will check to see how bad the infestation is, what part of the life-cycle the mites are under and perscribe to have oral/antibiotic drops and toppical dips to solve the problem.

They will also probably want the animal back in for a post-eval. just to be sure that the infestation is indeed gone.

cat mange treatment?

my cat has mange but i dont know how to treat it because she cant take any antibiotics or anti inflammatories (shes highly allergic).. shes been to the vet many times but he doesnt know what to give her because she needs a natural remedy, does anyone have any home remedies? thanks
is putting alcohol on her a bad idea? i just thing it would kill the mites but i dont know if its safe

I have just had a terrible mange problem with a new kitten. This is what the vet did: shot of Ivermectin (not a steroidal or anti-inflammitory) and a dose of selamectin (Revolution)
applied topically as directed.
Neither of these should cause a reaction in you cat, but do let the vet know about the allergies.
In two days you should see improvement.
DO NOT USE ALCOHOL. It will sting and your cat won’t let you handle her/him again.
In fact, there isn’t much else you can do except what I have listed above. Dips are toxic to cats. SEE YOUR VET.
