a girl i work with was diagnosed with human Sarcoptic Mange, different from the dog kind we see at work. i have bathed in pyrethrin, the flea shampoo, but it is also the main ingredient in the medicine they gave her. i am washing my blankets and sheets, and my boyfriend is washing too. i doubt i have this since i don’t actually touch her, but what else can i do to ease my mind?

As you know, sarcoptic mange is basically the same thing as scabies. It is highly contagious. It sounds like you have done everything that you should. I know you are worried, but only time will tell at this point. If you break out in a rash that itches like mad, then you need to treat again. You should not treat youself again for at least two weeks.

My englishbull dog had rash on her head the vet said it was mange , that was passed on by her parents she will have for the rest of her life.she is only 1yr old now she has it all over her neck she takes a bath 5 times a day she sees the vet 1 every week to dip . this is so exspensive is there anybody that has had this prolem with there dog and is there anything to do for her

Demodectic mange is not generally contagious; these mites thrive only on very specific hosts (dogs) and transmission usually occurs only from the mother to nursing puppies during the first few days after birth.

Some breeds appear to have an increased risk of mild cases as young dogs, including the Afghan Hound, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Chihuahua, Shar Pei, Collie, Dalmatian, Doberman Pinscher, Bulldog, German Shepherd Dog, Great Dane, Old English Sheepdog, American Pit Bull Terrier, West Highland White Terrier and Pug. There is strong evidence that a predilection for juvenile demodectic mange is inherited.
Minor, localized cases are often treated with medicated shampoos and not treated with agents aimed at killing mites as these infestations often resolve within several weeks in young dogs.

Demodectic Mange with secondary infection is treated with antibiotics and medicated shampoos as well as parasiticidal agents. Amitraz is a parasiticidal rinse that is licensed for use in many countries for treating canine demodicosis. It is applied weekly or biweekly, for several weeks, until no mites can be detected by skin scrapings.

Demodectic mange in dogs can also be managed with avermectins, although there are few countries which license these drugs, which are given by mouth, daily, for this use. Ivermectin is used most frequently.

I would talk with your vet and see if using the Ivermectin daily dose for a month might work in your situation. You need to kill the mites, they will need to do monthly skin scrapings to verify that the mites are gone.

Demodectic mange is primarily a problem for young dogs. It is a genetic anomoly that the dog can pass on to next generation. She is spayed, yes?

There are all kinds of “natural treatments” for mange, have no clue if they work. Mostlikely not.

Sarcoptic Mange is the name for the skin disease caused by infection with the Sarcoptes scabei mite. Mites are not insects; instead they are more closely related to spiders. They are microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Adult Sarcoptes scabei mites live 3-4 weeks in the host’s skin. After mating, the female burrows into the skin depositing 3-4 eggs in the tunnel behind her. The eggs hatch in 3-10 days producing a larva which, in turn, moves about on the skin surface eventually molting into a “nymphal” stage and finally into an adult. The adults move on the surface of the skin where they mate and the cycle begins again with the female burrowing and laying eggs.

I just ordered Diatomaceous Earth but never tried it.I got the kind you can safely put on pets,take as a remedy for yourself for different ailments&use around house to kill different kinds of bugs.If anyone has used it please let me know&if it worked.I mainly got it b/c my cats have mange&fleas&its getting out of control.And since this seems to be only natural&safe method to using anything without pesticide or chemicals&is safe for everybody but bugs &is cheap I’m trying it.So only if u used yourself please let me know how good or bad it is.Thanks.

I found a litter of 5 stray kittens who were COMPLETELY infested with fleas. It was really bad. Since they were so young, traditional flea medicines were out of the question, and I managed to get rid of the fleas with a flea comb, DE, and baby shampoo as my only arsenal.
First of all, you need to make sure you got the human grade DE…the pool grade stuff is potentially toxic. Sprinkle the DE on your carpets, leave for a day, and the vacuum it up. You’ll have to do this every week or so for a month, because DE does not kill flea eggs, so you have to kill them as they hatch. At the same time every week, sprinkle about 3-4 pinches worth on your kitties, rub it in, and leave it for a few days. Then wash them with shampoo or Dawn dish soap, and comb them with a flea comb.
The main thing is just to KEEP AT IT!! Doing all of this once will not get rid of the fleas. Every week, wash all your bedding, kitties bedding/towels in hot water. Be consistent.
The best of luck to you, you’re in for a lot of work, and a lot of white dust, but it can work if you stick at it!

I am curious as to what the symptoms are? Is it more common in outside dogs than indoor dogs? What can be don’t to correct the problem? Mychocolate lab has tiny insect-bite-like marks on her ear flaps that are crusty and she has lost some hair and has thinning hair on her belly and chest. Thanks!

Sarcoptic mange, commonly known as canine scabies, is caused by the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei. These microscopic mites can invade the skin of healthy dogs or puppies and create a variety of skin problems, the most common of which is hair loss and severe itching. While they will infect other animals and even humans, they prefer to live their short lives on dogs. Fortunately, there are several good treatments for this mange and the disease can be easily controlled

The symptoms are varied, but usually include hair loss and severe itching especially on the elbows, ears, armpits, hocks, chest, and ventral abdomen (belly). The mites prefer to live on areas of the skin that have less hair. As the infection worsens it can spread over the entire body. Small red pustules often develop along with yellow crusts on the skin. Because of the severe itching and resultant scratching, the skin soon becomes traumatized and a variety of sores and infections can develop as a result. The itching seems to be much worse in warm conditions such as indoors or near a stove or heat vent. If the infection goes untreated or is mistakenly treated as an allergy, the skin may darken due to the constant irritation, and the surrounding lymph nodes may become enlarged.

Sarcoptic Mange is a somewhat common infection and many cases have often been misdiagnosed as severe atopy (inhalant allergy). Any time we see a dog who does not have a prior history of allergies and develops severe itching, or if the itching is not seasonal but year-round, we have to suspect sarcoptic mange.

The intense itching caused by the sarcoptic mite is actually thought to be caused from a severe allergic reaction to the mite. When dogs are initially infected with Sarcoptes they do not develop itching for several weeks. If the animals are treated and then reinfected at a later time, severe itching starts almost immediately, which indicates the itching may be due to an allergic reaction. However, the standard treatments for allergies generally will not decrease the symptoms of scabies, and will do nothing to cure the disease.

Here’s our first foster, Sebastian. We were told he was a Chow mix, but actually we think he is probably a Shepard.

He had severe Sarcoptic Mange at 8 weeks old, and for about 5-6 weeks we had him at my moms to get him healthy and adoptable. We miss him!
