My dog has sarcoptic mange, please help.?
My dog was diagnosed w/sarcoptic mange. She is getting injections to treat it, but I am worried about re-infestation. I can’t isolate her for 4-6 weeks while the shots begin to work and I am unclear on how often I should be cleaning everything she touches! I’ve cleaned everything in the house again and again, but how long until I can relax a little???
call the vet i feel sorry for you

do you think this is sarcoptic mange and how do you treat it?
Well my vet won’t treat it until the slide results come back in 2 weeks.
My dogs are itching constantly and their hair is falling out on their ears and backs of their front legs. They are also itching their chest. Their skin is scaley.
I don’t want to wait 2 weeks to treat them so I’m trying home remedies in the meantime. I’m already using gentian violet (antifungal) and put vitamin E liquid on the scaley skin, but so far it’s not helping.
Please any suggestions because I am tempted to just go to another vet but my current vet said the reason he doens’t just want to treat it is because the medicine is harsh and he wants to be sure it’s sarcoptic mange or another fungal infection.
Thank you for ANY help
When he first checked the skin scrape right after he did it, he said all he saw was normal skin bacteria (staph i think) but then a few days later he said the slide changed colors and was fungal..i don’t understand why he can’t take a hair sand check for mites or something! and Ms. Manners…Im not sure..on my heels there are little bumps that look like poison ivy or mosquitoe bites but I do go walking through woods and fields so it could really be poison ivy. it itches but not terrible like my dogs are itching.
and my dogs don’t have little bumps, theirs is just like really scaley scabby skin and hair loss
my dog is a border collie mix
thank you for the link Jessie. ok if my vet doesn’t call me back by today (i called friday) i’ll see a new vet because I really think this is what it is..and if the treatment won’t hurt them i think that’s better than letting them scratch themselves raw, it just looks so uncomfortable for them
He hasn’t returned my call…I think he’s mad that I never picked up the antibiotics for my other dog, but i don’t want her on them if there’s no bacteria infection.
If it is sarcoptic mange, you are dealing with a mite, and there is no effective home treatment.
I know itching dogs are driving you nuts, but wait for his diagnosis.
(I dont know why it would take 2 weeks to diagnose sarcoptic mange….maybe they have to culture the fungus to eliminate that possibility).
Are you seeing any bites on you?
I know my mother was bitten by the mites when her dogs had sarcoptic mange.
That would be a clear indication that you are dealing with mange.
*****
The mites can be very hard to see, even with a skin scraping.
Sometimes a vet will just treat the dog for sarcoptic mange in order to eliminate it as a possibility. Why dont you ask him if he would be willing to do that?

can my cat get mange because i was playing with a mangey cat?
I was babysitting for a friend today and went over the neighbors and one of their cats has mange. the cat was all over me, and the neighbor assured me it wasn’t contagious but i’ve seen on the internet that it is? I’m worrying because I don’t want my cat to catch it, ’cause we don’t have the money right now to get him to the vet if he does.
It depends what mange it is, but yes mange is contagious! You should watch out for yourself aswell as it can get into your clothes and spread anywhere. Also, some mange is spreadable to humans.

what is the mange and how do i get rid of it on my dogs and puppies?
I’ve had them dipped and gave them meds from the vet and no improvement. I’ve had to have 2 put to sleep because I could not get rid of the mange, no matter how I treated them.
Mange is a skin disease caused by parasitic mites. There are two common types (demodectic and sarcoptic) and a few others which are less common.
You get rid of them by having the vet take a skin scraping and identify the type of mites, and prescribe treatment. If the initial treatment does not work, you TAKE THEM BACK. Demodectic mange especially is very hard to get rid of, because it accompanies an immune system that is surpressed. It can take months and months of consistent treatment to get rid of it, and the dog can relapse later on when subjected to stress or illness. Any dog that produced a puppy with demodectic mange or has had symptomatic demodectic mange themselves should be altered and not bred as there’s a genetic component to the immune system impairment. Sarcoptic mange is generally easier to treat, but it’s HIGHLY contagious to other dogs, and to people.
So, what I’m saying is: You need to take them all back to the vet for further treatment. If you don’t feel your current vet is treating them adequately, use a different vet. But get them help, It’s very itchy and painful.

Symptoms and Treatment for Mange in Dogs?
I couple of weeks back I posted a Question on Yahoo Answers which didn’t seem to solve my dogs problem. For the last couple of months we have been backwards and forwards to the vets who don’t really seem to look into the issue instead they throw useless medication at her which has so far made her vomit the pills back up.
After a little more research on the internet I suspect that it could be a case of mange. But before I purchase any of the medication and cause her anymore stress I would like to get a second opinion; I am going to be taking her to the vets first thing Monday morning again… But I would really appreciate a professional’s opinion.
Molly has hair loss near her hind legs and around her eyes and nose. There is also a considerable amount of redness around the facial area, I will include a couple of pictures of Molly who’s going to be turning one this month so you can see these areas for yourself. Molly also is suffering from dandruff near her hind legs which you can’t really see from the pictures.
I love my dog and I really want the best for her but it seems the vet’s are only trying to milk us for our money, we have taken her to the vets about 5 times now for the same problem at 2 different veterinarians.
Best answer to the person who can answer these questions:
What are the symptoms of mange?
What is the treatment to mange here in the UK?
Does it sound like Molly has mange?
I just want to thank everyone in advance

Thank you for all the answers, as far as I am aware the only real change would be in her diet and that was from dry food to a mixture of wet and dry food.
I will be taking her to the vet on Monday and will ask for the Skin Scraping test.
That does sound and look like mange, in my opinion based on the mange cases I’ve seen. But it could possibly be other things as well.
First, you’ll need to know that there are two completely different types of mange:
1.) Sarcoptic mange: Highly contagious, and is generally passed from one animal to another. Although she doesn’t appear to have this type.
2.) Demodex (or Demodectic) mange: Not contagious through physical contact, this form is genetic based, and is usually passed down from parent to pup.
The symptoms of mange include: redness, flaky skin, chronic itching or biting, etc… and scabbing in the red/flaky areas. It usually begins on the face region (in my experience anyway), but can appear in other places. As far as treatment in the UK, I’m not sure if it’s any different, as I live in the US.
To diagnose mange, a vet would need to do a skin scraping of the effected areas to look for the mange mite. Keep in mind that Demodex is generally more difficult to see. Has your vet done any skin scrapings to determine that this IS mange?
Also, Demodex can reverse itself. A Demodex flare is caused by something impairing the immune system. This can be a fast change in food, a new allergy, an illness (even a small “cold” can cause it), stress, etc… If it IS Demodex and you can find the trigger, you can usually help the mange with little or no medication involved by simply removing the trigger. Demodex flares can happen at any time during a dog’s life, and can happen at any time that the immune system is impaired.
This could also be a case of allergies, a thyroid issue, etc… Did you change foods before this happened? Have you noticed any fleas? Have you recently moved to a new area? Has anything changed that could trigger an allergic reaction?
Your vet may well be doing the best that he can. If you’re not happy with the treatment your dog is receiving, find a new vet. Finding a vet that you like, etc… can take time, and you may end up going through a good number of various vets.

I have chickens dogs & cats. My dogs have mites (mange). Is there a safe product to use with all these pets?
I think the mites came from the chickens. Is Sevin dust safe to use on the yard & pets? Or is there something better?
Sevin dust if you read the label is for chickens as I recall.A powder that you would not want your cats & dogs to be inhaling.
A vet generally takes a scraping to determine what type of mange to treat. You need to know exactly what your animal has in order to correctly medicate.
Many products are species specific and toxic to other animals.
I certainly would not use the dust on domestic pets.Call your vet is the general and safe answer.

stray cat with mange?what should i do?
a stray cat has been coming to my house, ive been feeding it because it was starving , i think it has mange, its fur is all messed up and its eyes are weird…i havent touched it but i have 2 cats of my own that go outside and they fight with it.what should i do?i dont want it to be put to sleep…is their a cure for mange?
although there are treatments for mange, you cannot be sure that it has mange until you take it in to a vet. Do your cats have their vaccinations up to date? have you recently had them checked out by your vet? when you say fighting, is it just some scratches or bite wounds as well? If this cat is a stray, call the local humane society to pick it up, if it is sick, it needs to be cared for, and if nobody is willing to care for it, it deserves a humane death instead of being hit by a car, chewed up by a dog or die of feline leukaemia or infectious peritonitis by itself under a bush or deck slowly. If you can trap it and get it looked after you may find that it is not a bad cat, just simply an unkempt one and it might learn to live with your cats. In the end, don’t trust it has ‘just mange’, it may carry any number of other diseases, that may not only be dangerous to your cats but perhaps to dogs or humans also, like rabies for example. I don’t like to see these cats be euthanized either, but it is better to have a humane death, than a miserable life and suffer for some irresponsible human’s actions. You never know, it might be tattooed or microchipped and then you can try to locate the owner. Good Luck to you and your cats with this situation.

What steps can I take for my cat so that his "mange" does not come back ?
He has recovered from a severe mange that he must have got from my dog.
His skin is back to normal after the vet injected him and I have been putting some ointment behind his back of his ears.
What can I do to make sure that my cat does not get mange again ?
The vet told me it is demoxic or something like that name kind of Mange.
Demodectic mange is caused by the demodex mite. This mite naturally lives in or near hair follicles on all mammals. A flare up, such as the condition mange usually occurs when the host’s immune system is compromised or they have a sensitivity to the mites.
The demodectic mange is not as common in cats as it is in dogs. Normally the mite that causes mange in cats is the sarcoptic “scabies” mite. The demodex mite is long and narrow (cigar shaped) and the sarcoptic mite is round or oval. Both are microscopic. The vet will usually do a skin scraping to correctly identify the mite.
Recommendations for preventing a future breakout is to thoroughly wash bedding (or discard if unwashable). Another recommendation from the sites below is to use Revolution. Revolution is available at your vet by prescription. It is a good product to also fight fleas, ear mites, and intestinal parasites.
Fighting mange can be a lot of work, I hope you don’t have to again.

Cat Mange?
I have 2 kittens and a full grown female. They have hair loss on their body, head and paws. It’s not really that bad, sometimes you cant even tell some hair is missing. They do scratch themselves but not to much. On the adult her hair comes right off and leaves hair everywhere. but other then the hair loss the cats look fine and healthy
Does it sound like mange or possibly ring worms?
I’m thinking about using Lyme Dip. Would that help?
DO NOT use lyme dip on a kitten!!! Do NOT use any over the counter lyme dip on any cat EVER. What you describe could be any number of things and needs to be evaluated by a licensed veterinarian. Call your vet!
