Should demodectic mange be treated immediately?
Thank you PekeGirl!
I suspect that my dog may have it since he’s been scratching heavily around one eye to the point where it’s scabby and hairless. I made an appointment with the vet and will be heading there tmrw, but I’ve been reading about how most cases of localized demodectic mange clear up on their own. I’ve also been reading about how the irritation could also be due to a food allergy. Anyone have any experience with this particular symptom (scabs around eye)?
he’s almost two and a shepherd mix…
i work at a shelter and I see tons of dogs that come in with demodex. localized mange does seems to clear up easily but when it starts to scab, it does need to be treated. there is actually a flea medicine that your vet can give you that is also used for this type of mange. It’s called promeris. ask your vet about it, because it is a great product. we use it on every cat and dog we get in. hope that helps!
The Transformation of Crusty Malone – Episode 3
OK, so here we are 6 weeks after we started treating Crusty. He IS growing hair, but still has some way to go before he’s out of the woods. You can see how long a process it is to treat dog mange! I think I messed up by trying to do this with less ivermectin. I should have done 1 dose every 2 weeks, three times. We probably would have been further along. He’ll get his third ivermectin dose tomorrow, as he has new crusty lesions on his head and today I detected tape worms (yuck). He continues to get sulpur homeopathic drops daily, plus the mange dip once a week. It is possible, apparently, to treat this condition without the use of toxic agents like ivermectin, but it can take a very long time (up to 6 months), which is not an option for me; plus also for that he needs twice daily remedies and because he’s a street dog with a large territory we can never find him twice per day. Hence we have opted for the allopathic route.

Is mange in cats treated thesame as in dogs? is there a home remedy?
I donot have much money (& I am not asking for any!)
He is maybe 1month couple weeks old,&has been Licking non stop, his legs and stomach are hairless and flaky from the constant lick. My Vet visit it tomarrow, I do hope its cheap for I only have the consult money but if the treament is over $50.00 dollars We should be fine.
mange in cats is extremely rare, it’s doubtful to be that. (it starts at the ears or top of the head most of the time.) maybe allergies? many cats have them (to all sorts of things from flea bites to food ingredients to pollens) and itchiness & licking/fur pulling are common symptoms of it.
if it looks like it be an expensive treatment once the vet diagnosis something, don’t be too shy to ask if there is anything that can be done at home or if there is a human equivalent instead. he wants your kitty to get better too and will do what he can to help you do that, esp if a cheaper treatment is available.

Cheyletiella Mange Is The Type That's Most Apparent.
Mange happens, much of the time, in dogs that aren't healthful and clean, but this isn't always the case. Mange is extremely transmittable, so if your healthy pet has been around another animal which has been discomfited, there's a chance that he can also contract the illness. It is crucial that you act right away to forestall it from spreading. If your dog is healthy, he's going to have a good immunological system which will help to defeat the bugs. To treat within of the ears, use 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt containing acidophilus and rub it within the ears. A very effective home cure to treat mange is by utilising a mix of one % hydrogen peroxide with borax and water. One large spoon of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar added to your pet’s meal will treat and reduce mange.
Melt utterly and wash your dog using this blend one time every week. The skin might have red spots and virtually look like burns are present. This sort of mange can regularly be handled with shampoos and medicine. Now we move on to the second type, demodectic mange. If not treated this mange can become more major and grow at a fast rate as the mites grow in number and start feeding off the injured skin pores. The mites attack below the follicles causing eruptions and baldness.
Rare types of mange that may also have an effect on your moggy are Demodectic, Cheyletiella, Chiggers, or Sarcoptic mange. Noteodric mange, the most typical form is sometimes known as scabies or head mange. Nevertheless it may also attack round the ears and neck in addition to spread to most all the parts of the body if grim enough. With this skin affliction your pussy-cat is plagued by the mite that burrows under the skin and as a consequence causes your pet to scrape themselves so approximately that it may cause sores and bleeding. It's also the form that can also cause serious alopecia, and can be broadcast to humans if not handled. Cheyletiella mange is the type that's most detectable. Note the 3 different kinds of mange call for different techniques of treatment. The mites burrow themselves into the skin of the dog to eat the nutriments and then reproduce. This is the one ordinarily known as the walking dandruff.
Demodex mange getting worse after proper treatment?
I have a blue heeler mix puppy who started loosing hair around 4 months of age. Vet did a scrape and showed demodex mange (aka puppy mange) and gave us four treatments of Promeris.
After the first treatment, she seemed to be more itchy for a day or two, then got much better and some hair started growing back. About a week before she was due for a second dose, she got very itchy again and was loosing more hair on her face and started loosing hair on her legs and her back.
I called the vet to see if I could treat her early, but she said to wait until the day she was due and it’s normal for it to spread a little after the first dose. Last week I gave her the second dose and she is more itchy than ever and loosing a lot of hair on her legs and back now. She is NOT bald, but she has many thin patches and her facial hair is very thin.
7 days after the second treatment (this past Sunday) I gave her a bath with an antibiotic shampoo and an oatmeal shampoo to hopefully soothe the skin and help keep her from itching herself raw.
The bath helped with the itching but she is still loosing a lot of hair.
I was wondering if I should see my vet again about doing some kind of medicated dips or if I should just continue with the last two doses of Promeris??
Also, has anyone else had a dog with demodex mange? Did it get worse before it got better?
I just feel bad for my pup, I just want her to be healthy.
Thanks!
My female is recovering from Demodex right now. She had a severe case of the generalized form of Demodex. Her vet did a skin scraping in two different places to confirm that it was in fact, Demodex and not the Sarcoptic(which is contagious to other animals and humans). It was Demodex. She ended up getting pustules from it, which meant that they were getting infected. Pretty bad. The vet prescribed Ivermectin. She started at .15cc and every day she told me to increase it by .15cc.just until day 6. By day 6 she was at .90cc, she told me to continue the medication for 30 days. Ivermectin isn’t safe for all dogs, herding dogs especially, so talk to your vet and see if your dog would be OK with this treatment. It is also used as a heartworm and parasite preventative. She was also prescribed Cephalexin that she had to take twice a day and a medicated shampoo(Benzoyl Peroxide) which opened up her pores. I had to give her a bath 3 days a week and when I put the shampoo on her I had to leave it on for 15 minutes, before I could rinse it out. I didn’t see anything, but progress from these treatments. It has been 1 month and all of her hair, except for a little patch on her head where the vet did a recheck scraping, is looking better than ever. After the 30 days, when she did the recheck, she only found 4 live mites, and she is still on her meds for another 30 days. I am very pleased at the results.
I hope that this helps and your baby gets better
Poor Little Mangie Basset Hound
http://www.bassethoundtown.com/
Yesterday, 5-3-08 I received a message from Devon in CA about a poor little mangie basset hound in a KY pound.
Here is the e-mail:
Jimmy picked this dog up on the side of the road Tuesday. He said it was a sweet dog and he didn’t have the heart to put him down. He took
him to the vet and had him treated for sarcoptic mange. Our nights are cold, so I worry about him being in an outside pen.
He is in OSP 1 in Morehead KY at Rowan County Pound 606-784-4930.

what do you think about these products for sarcoptic mange?
My dog might have a liver disease I am *NOT* giving him more chemicals.
do you think these are scams or know of something better?
thanks

those links are for nontoxic products
the holistic vet said sulfur. I have been giving it but it does take a long time for any skin problem.
Inga, yeah my vet(not holistic one) said the dip was a possibility but he said it’s toxic too.
marci- I didn’t TD you. but to be honest I don’t have confidence in any vet I’ve been to…between my other dog and her seizures I delt with this summer, watching the vets major FAIL like not even dx’ing her with seizures until they saw the videos I took, when I kept telling them IT IS SEIZURES (they insisted a FLEA ALLERGY when she had never had fleas!!) then how long it took to convince this one vet it’s sarcoptic mange, and the other vets just dismissed it because mites didn’t show up on the skin scrape (i read it’s almost impossible to see the mites on a skin scrape) So between my two dogs, $4000 later, sorry but I don’t trust vets one bit. The lied about vaccines, my dog got vaccinosis. They lied about prednisone, my dog couldn’t pick his head up on it and I wouldnt be surprised if it wasn’t prednisone that damaged his liver. So I’m doing things nontoxic from now on.
the holistic vet doesn’t believe in suppressing any skin condition…she says if you suppress it, it goes inside deeper..so she won’t recommend anything topical..
ok. I might do the heartworm injections still. if it’s really impossible to treat this without.
the sulfur is homeopathy and yeah I started it before I saw the holistic vet and it’s not helped yet.
he was taking pred i think 2 weeks but it was a large dose.
it’s just whenever I have trusted vets, they ended up hurting my dogs. it took me 4 weeks to find a vet who treated for sarcoptic mange because others didn’t believe it and drugged up my dogs with antibiotics and steroids?? that’s just so stupid to me.
thanks Inga..sleep well.
If I had to pick one it would be the first one. At least sulfur eventually helps. Not impressed with the second one at all. Why not ask your holistic vet? Your dog should be bathed in a sulfur product every three days for eight weeks. Systemic stuff isn’t going to touch this.
Note: I called a holistic vet friend of mine. I don’t know much about holistic medicine. She indicated to me that if you were her client, she’s recommend bathing your dog in a sulfur product once weekly. She would also recommend that any long hair be trimmed back to 1/4 " so that the product would have total access to the skin. The product would need to stay on the dog for at least 10 minutes to be effective. She says that she really doesn’t use sulfur chemicals much orally for skin issues. This is because the large amounts required orally for skin issues can cause some toxicities, including liver and kidney damage as well as blood cell deformities. She also told me that just because sulfur is "natural" it is still an elemental chemical. She told me that many "natural" treatments can cause as much if not more damage as pharmaceuticals and that all medications must be used with care and consideration.
Cat Mange?
I have 2 kittens and a full grown female. They have hair loss on their body, head and paws. It’s not really that bad, sometimes you cant even tell some hair is missing. They do scratch themselves but not to much. On the adult her hair comes right off and leaves hair everywhere. but other then the hair loss the cats look fine and healthy
Does it sound like mange or possibly ring worms?
I’m thinking about using Lyme Dip. Would that help?
DO NOT use lyme dip on a kitten!!! Do NOT use any over the counter lyme dip on any cat EVER. What you describe could be any number of things and needs to be evaluated by a licensed veterinarian. Call your vet!
