Will my dogs hair grow back after treatment for mange?

My dog has a few bald spots on his body. He is going to get treatment for mange but I was wondering if he will have those bald spots permanently.
This is our first dog and he has always scratched from day one. We have been giving him flea medication also from day one. He started with 2 small bald spots on his leg and we thought he might have scraped himself while playing in the yard. However, more spots started to appear and we finally took him to the vet.

My understanding is that his hair will grow back with time and healing. I’ve heard of some really bad cases where pets have lost 50% or more of their hair, and have had a full recovery, but it will take time… sometimes weeks or months depending on how bad the loss is.

I’d like to ask you a question in return, if you dont mind…
What was the very first sign you noticed, that your dog had mange?

I’m actually researching this very issue, as my little chihuahua has had a horrible case of the ‘itchies’ for over a week now, but NO other signs. No hair loss, no sores, no rash. But definitely intense itching. So much so, that she’s waking me up at night. I’m so sad for her, and I’ve already treated her with Revolution, but no relief. She just keeps scratching and biting at her hind-quarters. Thank goodness… not so bad to make herself bleed.

is there a homeopathic treatment for scarcoptic mange?

RACENTLY AQUIRED TWO 6 WEEK OLD PUPPIES .ARRIVING HOME FROM MISS. I NOTICED REDNESS ,RASH(BUMPS LIKE FLEA OR BUG BITES )TOOK THEM TO THE VET AND THEY WERE DIAGNOSED WITH SCARCOPTIC MANGE AND NOW I HAVE ON MY LEFT ARM ,ARMPIT AREA ANDUPPER TORSO FROM HOLDING THEM

Go to a human doctor, NOW. Mange is not something you want to screw around with.
Mange is caused by burrowing mites, which are essentially microscopic spiders that live in your skin. Their movements and their droppings cause an immune response, making the skin swell and itch. As they multiply, the affected areas spread.
According to Wikipedia, twice weekly “sulfurated lime rinses” are an effective treatment. There are also a few effective topical and internal drugs like Ivermectin.
Mange is itchy and painful, and it spreads, as you’re probably finding out right now. It won’t go away on its own. Get effective treatment for you and your dogs. If you find a homeopathic remedy that works, great, but it’s not fair to the dogs to make them endure the mites when working drugs are available.

Is mange in cats treated thesame as in dogs? is there a home remedy?

I donot have much money (& I am not asking for any!)
He is maybe 1month couple weeks old,&has been Licking non stop, his legs and stomach are hairless and flaky from the constant lick. My Vet visit it tomarrow, I do hope its cheap for I only have the consult money but if the treament is over $50.00 dollars We should be fine.

mange in cats is extremely rare, it’s doubtful to be that. (it starts at the ears or top of the head most of the time.) maybe allergies? many cats have them (to all sorts of things from flea bites to food ingredients to pollens) and itchiness & licking/fur pulling are common symptoms of it.

if it looks like it be an expensive treatment once the vet diagnosis something, don’t be too shy to ask if there is anything that can be done at home or if there is a human equivalent instead. he wants your kitty to get better too and will do what he can to help you do that, esp if a cheaper treatment is available.

Anyone know how to cure demodectic mange?

My puppy is about 12 weeks old and she has demodectic mange it had been pass by her mother. Not really sure on what to do for her so maybe you guys can help. Maybe some of you have been though the same thing. Thanks for your help.

demodectic mange is a mite that naturally occurs on all dogs. some dogs when under stress or in a new environement will have an overpopulation of this mite and have hair loss. the tendancy of this can be genetic, but it’s not specifically something she “caught” from her mother. it is best treated under a veterinarians supervision and direction. ivermectin is often the drug of choice but you are better to get the dose from a vet. many vet will also use an antibiotic to help the dog from getting secondary infections also. since this is a sign of a weakened immune system. it is successfully treated in most cases. but i would start at your vet for further treatment.

Ivormectin for Demodectic mange?

My puppy got demodectic mange and the vet prescribed him Ivormectin last tuesday, I give him 1 cc a day, for 30 days, it’s almost been 2 weeks and he’s just losing more hair in more spots, should i keep him on it for the 30 days until I go back, or go back this monday when the same vet will be there?

It takes a while. Ivermectin injections seem to work more quickly, but they can’t be administered to very young critters, as I suspect your puppy is.
Certainly though, if the mange seems to be getting worse, bring your puppy in for a check up. It is always, when it comes to animals health, better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck.

My dog has sarcoptic mange, please help.?

My dog was diagnosed w/sarcoptic mange. She is getting injections to treat it, but I am worried about re-infestation. I can’t isolate her for 4-6 weeks while the shots begin to work and I am unclear on how often I should be cleaning everything she touches! I’ve cleaned everything in the house again and again, but how long until I can relax a little???

call the vet i feel sorry for you

do you think this is sarcoptic mange and how do you treat it?

Well my vet won’t treat it until the slide results come back in 2 weeks.

My dogs are itching constantly and their hair is falling out on their ears and backs of their front legs. They are also itching their chest. Their skin is scaley.

I don’t want to wait 2 weeks to treat them so I’m trying home remedies in the meantime. I’m already using gentian violet (antifungal) and put vitamin E liquid on the scaley skin, but so far it’s not helping.

Please any suggestions because I am tempted to just go to another vet but my current vet said the reason he doens’t just want to treat it is because the medicine is harsh and he wants to be sure it’s sarcoptic mange or another fungal infection.

Thank you for ANY help
When he first checked the skin scrape right after he did it, he said all he saw was normal skin bacteria (staph i think) but then a few days later he said the slide changed colors and was fungal..i don’t understand why he can’t take a hair sand check for mites or something! and Ms. Manners…Im not sure..on my heels there are little bumps that look like poison ivy or mosquitoe bites but I do go walking through woods and fields so it could really be poison ivy. it itches but not terrible like my dogs are itching.
and my dogs don’t have little bumps, theirs is just like really scaley scabby skin and hair loss
my dog is a border collie mix
thank you for the link Jessie. ok if my vet doesn’t call me back by today (i called friday) i’ll see a new vet because I really think this is what it is..and if the treatment won’t hurt them i think that’s better than letting them scratch themselves raw, it just looks so uncomfortable for them
He hasn’t returned my call…I think he’s mad that I never picked up the antibiotics for my other dog, but i don’t want her on them if there’s no bacteria infection.

If it is sarcoptic mange, you are dealing with a mite, and there is no effective home treatment.

I know itching dogs are driving you nuts, but wait for his diagnosis.
(I dont know why it would take 2 weeks to diagnose sarcoptic mange….maybe they have to culture the fungus to eliminate that possibility).

Are you seeing any bites on you?
I know my mother was bitten by the mites when her dogs had sarcoptic mange.
That would be a clear indication that you are dealing with mange.
*****
The mites can be very hard to see, even with a skin scraping.
Sometimes a vet will just treat the dog for sarcoptic mange in order to eliminate it as a possibility. Why dont you ask him if he would be willing to do that?

Demodectic mange questions?

We adopted a dog from a rescue shelter only to discover that she had demodectic mange. She would itch and rub and roll and scratch until she was bleeding. The folds of her mouth were red and swollen and she had a spot that bled next to her eye where she would rub her face along the grass every second that she went outside. A skin scraping was done and the diagnosis of demodectic mange was made. She was treated with Ivermectin orally and an antibiotic. She never displayed hair loss as the rash like bumps and redness appear mainly on her belly and under her arms in the armpit areas. She has been on this medication for two weeks and she is not getting any better. She still itches and scratches and rubs like crazy which I have read is not a side affect of the mites. I have to take her for a follow up this week and I was wondering how long does this mange treatment take to start working? And also, I know that the mites are present in all dogs so wouldn’t a scraping show them present in every dog? Is it possible that she is suffering from an allergy on top of the mange which is causing the itching?
Erm, she has DEMODECTIC mange not SARCOPTIC mange…there is a difference.

Put the dog in t-shirts while she heals up. It controls the damage done by the scratching. Severe Demodex can take months to clear up, so don’t expect miracles.
The antibiotic is probably to cure a bacterial skin infection caused by the scratching.

Demodex mites are NOT visible unless they wake up. so no, you can’t do a skin scraping on just any dog and find mites. In healthy dogs they are dormant.

You need to get this girl on a really good diet and some immune booster vitamins.

The good news is oral Ivermectin is pretty cheap and works!

I have chickens dogs & cats. My dogs have mites (mange). Is there a safe product to use with all these pets?

I think the mites came from the chickens. Is Sevin dust safe to use on the yard & pets? Or is there something better?

Sevin dust if you read the label is for chickens as I recall.A powder that you would not want your cats & dogs to be inhaling.
A vet generally takes a scraping to determine what type of mange to treat. You need to know exactly what your animal has in order to correctly medicate.
Many products are species specific and toxic to other animals.
I certainly would not use the dust on domestic pets.Call your vet is the general and safe answer.

a pet I rehomed gave my pet sarcoptic mange?

Ok my ex boyfriend couldn’t take care of his dog so I took her.
I tried to rehome her. I never could find a good home for her.

Well back in January I found her a home I thought. They seemed to love her and she stayed with them until about 4 weeks ago.
They called and said they couldn’t take care of her anymore. So we went and got her.

Well as soon as we got her home she was itching and scratching furiously. We assumed fleas (we saw fleas on her) so we treated her with frontline immediately and gave her children’s benadryl.

Then my cat started itching so I was like damnit now the cat has fleas!!!

..Well..they were both still itching even after flea meds. So we took the dog to the vet.

Sarcoptic mange.

We took the cat to the vet.

Sarcoptic mange.

I am furious now. Those people gave me back a dog with the mange that has now infested my cat.

I really want to say something to them.. should I? Or should I just let it go?

I can’t prove they gave it to her other than the fact she was itching furiously within hours of us getting her home from their house, and NONE of my cats had ANY fleas, itching, rashes, hair loss, ticks, or anything at all until we brought back the dog.

You should confront her previous owners in person with the fact that the dog had Sarcoptic mange and make them pay for the flea treatment, vet and any thing else you had to pay for because of that for both you cat and dog.Good luck
