My puppy has Sarcoptic mange. Will he get it again? How long before it goes?
Hi my jack russell puppy of 8 weeks has a bad case of sarcoptic mange…i rescued him from living outside in a area with alot of bigger dogs so he has had a rough start to life, i took him in 5 days ago and notcied his skin, someone suggested it be stress related, it didnt clear up so he was at the vets today and we had it confirmed with a skin scraping….he is to start treatment 2morrow by being “bathed” the vet says he needs this 3-4 times….what else will he need?? He mentioned anti bs?? Also how long before he starts to feel better as it breaks my heart to see him in pain the poor little thing…Because hes had it once will he have it again??
His name is patch ![]()
I will ask my vet 2morrow any questions i have, unfortuanetly he is a foreign gentleman and he found some of the language barrier a little hard trying to explain the answers to questions i had…..
My daughters Pug had this and it cleared up with the treatments.Stress can be a big factor if it was to come back so keep your baby as calm as possible. Also feed a good quality food with no by-products or grains

This is very easy to treat. It doesn’t live off the body, so you just need to treat your dog. Ask your vet about a product called revolution. It is to prevent and cure-lice, mites, worms, repell ticks and fleas to! It is an amazing product that just goes on the skin like frontline does. In two doses of that, your puppy should be as good as new! You might have been give a sulfa dip/shampoo? That is good for the skin as well, and can kill the mites, but it is not as effective as the revolution. They revolution comes in a dose for small 8 week old puppies to. So ask about it.
Good luck.

If you get it cleared up completely, there is no reason he should get it again.
Be aware that it is very contagious, and a dog can catch sarcoptic mange from mites in the environment. That means you need to wash anything he comes into contact with, and keep him away from other dogs.
You can also be bitten by the mites, although they cant live on humans.
It sounds like your vet is using a dip to kill the mites. My mother adopted a dog that had sarcoptic mange, and her vet used Ivermectin (similar to what is in Revolution), plus a special shampoo.
It took about a of month of treatments to cure her dog, and after that my mother put all her dogs on Revolution for another couple of months, in case there were mites in the house somewhere.
If the vet is giving him antibiotics, it might be for an infection – the dogs itch so much, they can scrape the skin and it can get infected.
