My 6 month old labradoodle has demodectic mange. She’s gotten 1 mitaban dip so far, and her next appointment
is April 14th. I’ve been researching on mitaban dips, and a lot of sites say that they don’t work, or that they’re toxic. My pup’s about 20 lbs, and I adopted her in very poor conditions. Are there any alternatives?
There’s this one site that helps cure demodectic mange, but I’m not sure if it’s legitimate or not. Has anyone tried it before?

The dips are pretty expensive each time I go in, and they say she needs maybe 4-6 of them before she’s cured. I’m not sure if it’s worth it if it’s not a guarantee success, or if it will make her worse.
Thanks in advance for your help.
here are some pictures of her.

Mitaban dips DO work (trust me!) and they are non-toxic. If Mitaban dips were toxic vet offices would refuse to use them. We are there to help the animal, not poison it.
I checked out the product in the link you provided. Personally, I have never heard of it before now. If I were you, I would leave her treatment in the hands of your veterinarian. God forbid if she ever had a reaction or what not… they are there!
ADD: Betta has a wonderful point(!!)… Ivermectin *can* and has been used to help treat mange. The one “downside” we have seen at our hospital is the use of an ivermectin (or Interceptor, which is similar to an ivermectin) takes A LOT longer then the dip for results, however, you may feel more comfortable going that route. It is also quite a bit more pricey!
ADD2: She is oh-so cute!!! Her face is absolutely precious! I wish her a very quick recovery! Good for you for adopting!

At our office, we generally don’t use dips. We have seen some really bad reactions in the past. Our vets recommend using a course of Interceptor (one pill every day) for X amount of days to help control the mange. It can get pretty pricey, but the results have all been really good. Ask your vet if they have any alternatives that they feel comfortable using.

They do work trust me because my Rusty had it and the vet gave me that dip and I had to use it on him about 6 times but it never came back. Like the vet said I could either bring him in for his dips or i could do it myself the times he was suppose to have them if I had a well ventalated place to do it and I told him I did so I diped him myself when he was scheduled to have it. It cost but well worth it

My Great Dane had mange very badly. We spent alot of money on dips at the vet. Tryed almost any suggegestions to cure him, the worst was used moter oil! What finnally worked for him was a bleach / water solution. It’s been along time ago, but i think it was about a 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of water. We had a pool area, so it wasn’t a big deal. I can’t imagine how else this could work! We left him out till he dried – no rinsing. And we did it a couple times a week. It really worked for him. He went from no hair all over his back, oozing sores, to a full lusterous coat in about 2 months. Be careful tho, as your dog is not a big Great Dane– This was a last resort for us, with a dog that no treatment was working for. Stick to traditional treatment if you can. Mange is a condition that takes time to treat, and must be continued to treat for several weeks even after it LOOKS like it’s gone. Good Luck…

This is the best treatment for mange. Ivermectin, and Chlorhexiderm ( chlorhexiderm shampoo) baths. Both you can buy otc. The ivermectin is also called Ivomec it’s used to treat parasites in cattle and swine. The dose for dogs is usually .1ml per 10 lbs of body weight. But check with your vet first. Mange can take months to treat. But Ivermectin works really good for mange, and the chlorhexiderm shampoo with aid as a topical, and help with the skin irritation and discomfort.

Don’t worry about the Mitaban dips…they rarely cause side effects other than a redness to the skin or they can make the dog a little sleepy. We do them all the time. You can do them at home…ask the vet to tell you how because it will save you a lot of money and isn’t difficult to do. You’ll have to dip at least 6 times, about 1-2 weeks apart.
Giving Interceptor daily can be done, but is very very expensive. An alternative is daily Ivermectin, but it is given at high doses and should only be done under vet supervision to prevent problems.
The ointment in your link is OK if there are only one or two spots of hairloss on the face or head. Anywhere else or more wide spread and you have to do entire body dips or systemic control. I’ve seen hundreds of demodex cases over the years and have only seen one incurable case. In fact, most puppies with mild cases will heal all by themselves as their immune systems become stronger.

At our clinic we only use the mitaban dips for extreme cases. Like mange on the entire body. Mitaban is highly toxic and SHOULD NOT be used around people that are pregnant or have the possibility of being pregnant. It has been known to cause miscarriage in people and infertility in canines. 4-6 dips will not do any harm to the dog, and will cure the mange but from the pictures you posted it doesn’t look like she has a severe case of it. Every dog has demodex, but not all dogs are allergic to them. The allergie to the mange is what causes the outbreak and the hair loss. Most puppies whos immune system is not fully mature can and will have an allergic reaction but normally grow out of it in a matter of a few months with no treatment at all. Most of the time when we see a puppy with a localized spot our vet tells the owners to just keep an eye on it. It will usually go away on its own. An important thing to remember is demodex is not contagious. So there is no worry to yourself or other pets.

Go to Barnes and Noble. Get this book, "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Martin Goldstein, DVM. It deals with holistic/natural cures for dogs. Page 234 has the info on mange.
