Can I get mange from my cat?
I dont know yet if she has it, but I think she does. I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow and if she has it can I be tested for it too? I heard it can be passed on to humans and she basically sleeps on my face every night.

Mange is most commonly found in dogs and other canines, but it can occur in other domestic and wild animals, and occasionally in humans.

It probably depends on what KIND of mange… there are several types. I’m not sure if humans can get any of them… but I know other animals can. The most common type is demodectic (sp?) mange, which according to my vet is something they are somehow born with and cannot be spread (though they have it for life… the symptoms can be treated, but it still exists).

It depends on what kind it is (if she has it) there are two kinds and 1 can be passed to humans but that is more rare. both types can be treated

cat mange is referred to as cat scabies…notoedres cati. it causes severe itching, hair loss on the head and neck, and spreading to the ears, eyelids, and slowly to the underbelly and paws. the skin will become thickened and wrinkled in the later stages, and covered with greyish yellow crust that oozes when they are scratched off. there is usually a secondary skin infection from scratching.
yes, humans can get it from cats. it’s generally self-limiting, and causes temporary itching. your cat will require a skin scraping and the vet or tech will look at the scraping under a microscope to identify what the parasite is. they usually drug the cat in order to bathe it with a solution to kill the mites. they will prob. recommend a product you’ll have to use in your house…bedding, carpets, etc to kill any remaining mites so that your cat won’t get re-infested. good luck with this. i hope your kitty feels better soon!!
**addendum** kittens can be born with mange mites…the mites burrow deeply into the skin and live off the blood of it’s host. and they reproduce fairly quickly, which is why it becomes out-of-control so easily**
