treating sarcoptic mange MYSELF?
My dogs have sarcoptic mange. It took 4 weeks to convince any vet of this because they wanted to blame allergies and saw no mites in the skin scrape. Right, $2000 later my dogs STILL have sarcoptic mange and NO treatment. I ordered on my own this white sulfur. I want to also treat them with revolution though. It’s such an easy treatment for this, my mind is boggled by the fact that no vet could just do this.
Anyway, I called my vet yesterday and asked this too. I’m tired of the vets and my dogs are suffering pretty bad and getting worse. My dog now has a hematoma in his other ear (his first hematoma was fixed with five drainings and steroid injections), he is BLEEDING my other dog has lesions on her stomach now.
I want to buy revolution and treat it myself immediately. But I don’t know if I can because I just gave them frontline plus on Nov 1 AND my dog has a liver problem.
My vet was off today but he called me back. He said yes there could be problems, it’s up to me I "could try it".
I’M SO FUCKING FRUSTRATED!!!! I DONT HAVE A DVM I CANT MAKE THESE DECISIONS WHAT IF I MAKE ONE THAT HURTS MY DOGS???????
This is the FOURTH vet. And I’ve been to 2 others in this area they’re awful. This one is the best one but he leaves all the decisions up to me because he doesn’t know what to do. I don’t either!!!
So anyone with knowledge about this please, can I give revolution when I already gave frontline plus this month and I don’t know. If you say ask a vet or go see a vet, you will automatically be blocked.
Thank you
to use revolution for a mange infestation, it has to be given every 2 weeks I read so it will be an overdose even without the frontline but that’s the treatment
I already have mite bites on me but they aren’t as bad as my dogs at all. but they’re typical sarcoptic mange..on my knees, shoulders and had it on my ankles. they seem to go away on me in 2 weeks but i got them again.
One of my dogs (noncollie) was given the heartgard injection (not pill, it was a higher dose) and immediately she stopped itching for about 24 hrs, but then started again because my other dog wasn’t given the shot
skin culture ruled out bacterial and fungal infections
allright no revolution. CRAP. the white sulfur should come tomorrow I had it 2 day delivery. i don’t know if that will work now because I’m thinking, these mites burrow under the skin how is anyything topical going to work
I’m sorry I was upset when I wrote this
neem powder given daily will build the dogs immune system and neem oil can be use externally ( however not on lesions) http://www.discoverneem.com/neem-oil-for-dogs.html

Dog has sarcoptic mange.. Help?
After way too many vet trips, they finally diagnosed him with sarcoptic mange.. It’s pretty bad and he just started a new medication. The vet did not give us any shampoo or anything, does anyone know any good shampoo I could wash him with? Also it took so many trips to the vet and so much medication for him to finally say it was mange. First it was a skin irritation then allergies. I’m starting to question if he knows what he is doing. Although he is supposedly a very good vet
Sarcoptic mange can be difficult to diagnose. The mites can be hard to see, even with a skin scraping, and are often confused with allergies.
If your dog is getting a medication like Ivermectin, that should clear it up without the use of a medicated shampoo.
My mothers vet suggested she use Adams shampoo along with the Ivermectin.
Ask your vet if he is okay with your doing that.
what do you think about these products for sarcoptic mange?
My dog might have a liver disease I am *NOT* giving him more chemicals.
do you think these are scams or know of something better?
thanks

those links are for nontoxic products
the holistic vet said sulfur. I have been giving it but it does take a long time for any skin problem.
Inga, yeah my vet(not holistic one) said the dip was a possibility but he said it’s toxic too.
marci- I didn’t TD you. but to be honest I don’t have confidence in any vet I’ve been to…between my other dog and her seizures I delt with this summer, watching the vets major FAIL like not even dx’ing her with seizures until they saw the videos I took, when I kept telling them IT IS SEIZURES (they insisted a FLEA ALLERGY when she had never had fleas!!) then how long it took to convince this one vet it’s sarcoptic mange, and the other vets just dismissed it because mites didn’t show up on the skin scrape (i read it’s almost impossible to see the mites on a skin scrape) So between my two dogs, $4000 later, sorry but I don’t trust vets one bit. The lied about vaccines, my dog got vaccinosis. They lied about prednisone, my dog couldn’t pick his head up on it and I wouldnt be surprised if it wasn’t prednisone that damaged his liver. So I’m doing things nontoxic from now on.
the holistic vet doesn’t believe in suppressing any skin condition…she says if you suppress it, it goes inside deeper..so she won’t recommend anything topical..
ok. I might do the heartworm injections still. if it’s really impossible to treat this without.
the sulfur is homeopathy and yeah I started it before I saw the holistic vet and it’s not helped yet.
he was taking pred i think 2 weeks but it was a large dose.
it’s just whenever I have trusted vets, they ended up hurting my dogs. it took me 4 weeks to find a vet who treated for sarcoptic mange because others didn’t believe it and drugged up my dogs with antibiotics and steroids?? that’s just so stupid to me.
thanks Inga..sleep well.
If I had to pick one it would be the first one. At least sulfur eventually helps. Not impressed with the second one at all. Why not ask your holistic vet? Your dog should be bathed in a sulfur product every three days for eight weeks. Systemic stuff isn’t going to touch this.
Note: I called a holistic vet friend of mine. I don’t know much about holistic medicine. She indicated to me that if you were her client, she’s recommend bathing your dog in a sulfur product once weekly. She would also recommend that any long hair be trimmed back to 1/4 " so that the product would have total access to the skin. The product would need to stay on the dog for at least 10 minutes to be effective. She says that she really doesn’t use sulfur chemicals much orally for skin issues. This is because the large amounts required orally for skin issues can cause some toxicities, including liver and kidney damage as well as blood cell deformities. She also told me that just because sulfur is "natural" it is still an elemental chemical. She told me that many "natural" treatments can cause as much if not more damage as pharmaceuticals and that all medications must be used with care and consideration.

My dog has sarcoptic mange, please help.?
My dog was diagnosed w/sarcoptic mange. She is getting injections to treat it, but I am worried about re-infestation. I can’t isolate her for 4-6 weeks while the shots begin to work and I am unclear on how often I should be cleaning everything she touches! I’ve cleaned everything in the house again and again, but how long until I can relax a little???
call the vet i feel sorry for you

do you think this is sarcoptic mange and how do you treat it?
Well my vet won’t treat it until the slide results come back in 2 weeks.
My dogs are itching constantly and their hair is falling out on their ears and backs of their front legs. They are also itching their chest. Their skin is scaley.
I don’t want to wait 2 weeks to treat them so I’m trying home remedies in the meantime. I’m already using gentian violet (antifungal) and put vitamin E liquid on the scaley skin, but so far it’s not helping.
Please any suggestions because I am tempted to just go to another vet but my current vet said the reason he doens’t just want to treat it is because the medicine is harsh and he wants to be sure it’s sarcoptic mange or another fungal infection.
Thank you for ANY help
When he first checked the skin scrape right after he did it, he said all he saw was normal skin bacteria (staph i think) but then a few days later he said the slide changed colors and was fungal..i don’t understand why he can’t take a hair sand check for mites or something! and Ms. Manners…Im not sure..on my heels there are little bumps that look like poison ivy or mosquitoe bites but I do go walking through woods and fields so it could really be poison ivy. it itches but not terrible like my dogs are itching.
and my dogs don’t have little bumps, theirs is just like really scaley scabby skin and hair loss
my dog is a border collie mix
thank you for the link Jessie. ok if my vet doesn’t call me back by today (i called friday) i’ll see a new vet because I really think this is what it is..and if the treatment won’t hurt them i think that’s better than letting them scratch themselves raw, it just looks so uncomfortable for them
He hasn’t returned my call…I think he’s mad that I never picked up the antibiotics for my other dog, but i don’t want her on them if there’s no bacteria infection.
If it is sarcoptic mange, you are dealing with a mite, and there is no effective home treatment.
I know itching dogs are driving you nuts, but wait for his diagnosis.
(I dont know why it would take 2 weeks to diagnose sarcoptic mange….maybe they have to culture the fungus to eliminate that possibility).
Are you seeing any bites on you?
I know my mother was bitten by the mites when her dogs had sarcoptic mange.
That would be a clear indication that you are dealing with mange.
*****
The mites can be very hard to see, even with a skin scraping.
Sometimes a vet will just treat the dog for sarcoptic mange in order to eliminate it as a possibility. Why dont you ask him if he would be willing to do that?

Additional Details
The brother of the siberian husky has sarcoptic mange I gave him 2 another person who got it checked todays
There is no ‘home remedy’ for sarcoptic mange. It’s also highly contagious, so expect the other puppy to pick it up as well. Even if he doesn’t have it, the vet will probably want to treat him, too. The standard protocol is to treat all dogs in the household if one is diagnosed.
Your dog needs to see a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. Explain that money is VERY tight and you would like to know what the least expensive, but still effective, option will be to treat.

Neglected Golden Retriever
This severely neglected dog was dropped off by my house. How can anyone treat an animal this way?
Honey was accepted by a small rescue “Wags to Whiskers” in Tuttle, OK. She has been starved and is emaciated. She has sarcoptic mange, heartworms, tapeworms and some dental issues. She is a lovely dog whose beautiful light shines through it all.
Honey is expected to have large vet bills so any donations would be appreciated.
