My 3 year old shih tzu had generalized demodec mange, been snipped, dipped, shot, on prednisone returns??
She is on a good food, nutro max. Vitamin E/Selenium, C & Amino Acids, it get’s better then flares up again. I’m really looking for a home rememdy. No more toxic dips & cortisone if I can help it
She has been tested first by the Vet the Rescue used, they said it was a bad case of Fle Infestation let go, My Vet then did a scraping said demo Mange In Oct. I’ve got a few very good books asnd researched plenty…So, I took her off the steroids almost immeadiately.Although one of my books does say in SOME cases this is the only thing that will help…If you use a low dose. Today her skin is red, I’m using Aloe from my plants. Wit’s end here, any idea what may help relieve her skin? She has been to the Vet sooooo many times, I’ve lost faith. From Holistic to conventional, could be impossible to clear up? My Vet said she has put down more Shih Tzu’s due to skin issues, I just don’t want to make her suffer if she is never going to get better….;( We have stuck to every treatment giving it a chance, other than prednisone because of her immune system. It’s very sad & today I just feel so so bad for her….
First of all, if your dog really does have generalized demodex- IT SHOULD NEVER GET A STEROID OF ANY KIND! Every dog has the demodex mite present in it’s skin, some dogs just fight it off better. Giving steroids to a dog suppresses the immune system and therefore they cannot fight off the mite. If your vet prescribed steroids while treating for mange, get a new vet. Unfortunately, there are no holistic remedies to fight the mite. Oral ivermectin daily, once weekly dips with mitaban/amitraz or if it is localized you can use goodwinol ointment. We have had some luck by applying Revolution twice a month until the skin is cleared up again. Keep with it- I have had to treat several older patients for over two years before we finally got a handle on it.

We don’t know your vet, so we have no way of knowing the answer. The price varies from one vet to another and from city to country and from one state to another, so the ONLY one who can answer your question with any degree of accuracy is YOUR VETs STAFF!

Is Lime Sulfur Dip safe to use on cats to treat sarcoptic mange? What other options (minus vet) are there?
About a month ago I noticed a cat w/ a very serious condition of mange hanging around my neighborhood. I had not seen this cat b4 & it was obvious that he was in a terrible state, w/most of his hair missing & very thin. =’[ He only came out at night & I was unsuccessful in my attempts to trap & hopefully help it. Its been 3wks since Ive last seen him. I have 4 cats of my own (all outdoor/indoor & neutered) & 1 has since died ‘mysteriously’ & 2 have begun losing patches of hair around the neck area. It was a terrible loss for me when I discovered that Allen had died & I am still grieving. I do not want to lose Kit Fisto or Lite Bulb to this terrible & torturous disease (mange). I do not have the $$ right now to get them both (or even 1) treated by a vet & its so frustrating when I know they need me.
The Lime Sulfur Dip method for treatment of feline mange is the most common in my online research. Is this safe for cats? What are the risks? What about homemade remedies? Please help…
About a year ago I resuced a Persian from the animal welfare centre where I help out. She kept coming back in because of ringworm and nothing would shift it. I looked on the internet and found Pets Best RX (Q Based Healthcare) which is an American based company (I live in the UK). The testimonials were excellent so I ordered the lime sulfur cream and also a healing spray. Their lime sulfur is white and smells fresh (just like tea tree oil). Within a matter of days Dora Blossom’s ringworm was healing well and, thankfully, has never returned. I will ALWAYS have the products in my home now as they deal with so many skin problems and I know they can be used for mange as well. The company are excellent and have a help line which you can call and talk things through. They will also e-mail you with answers to your problems if this is more convenient.
Have just checked phone number 1.337.937.8800 and they have a special section for mange – they recommend a spray followed by Sulfinex (the sulfur cream). Hope this helps.
Just to clarify – Dora had been battling with ringworm for a year and had been re-homed 3 times because of the problem. It was obvious that the usual prescription medicines were not working in her case. I did discuss the lime sulfur treatment with my vet and we decided to try it – with excellent results. I would not use ordinary lime sulfur (the green one) as this smells awful and is probably a horrible substance to put on a cat.
Good luck.
How do I cure my dogs mange?

well my dog had the same thing until we went out and bought a black spray bottle, it took it off after a week of using it, if you can’t go to the vet you should go to a place were they sell dog medicine and ask them
can u help me find some resources or infos regarding oral dosage of ivermectin for mange treatment in dogs?tnx
Other endectocides, such as moxidectin and ivermectin, which are not registered for the treatment of sarcoptic mange in dogs, have been reported to be quite effective depending on the dosage and route of administration. Ivermectin (200 µg/kg, PO or SC, 2 treatments 2 wk apart) is very effective and usually curative. Ivermectin at this dosage iscontraindicated in Collies and Collie crosses. Idiosyncratic reactions in other breeds may also occur. Additionally, the heartworm status of the dog should be evaluated before treatment.
Home cure for Demodicosis (demodex) mange?
Does anyone know of a home cure for this type of mange. The dip that the vets have to use are so dangerous. It can kill the dog or cause brain damage.
He is on a good diet. Can anyone tell me the name of the cream I could get for this. He also gets a bath once a week.
Can he take Ivermectin even tho he is on a once a month heartworm pill?
Ivermectin also works as a topical to treat demodex. Talk to your vet about using it orally, a dialy dose is fine even if he takes heartworm medicine. Actually the dosing for demodex is much higher than heart worm prevention.
There are some holistic remedies out there as well, but I can’t recall any of the names. Mitoban dips are horrible for dogs and should only be used in extreme situations.
Dosage of ivermectin “In small animals, all use for skin conditions is extra-label in the USA. For Demodex , the dosage is 0.3-0.6 mg/kg, PO, sid until 2 negative skin scrapings 1 mo apart.” from http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/190504.htm
PO means orally and sid means once daily… heartguard and similar medicines are on the order of mcg.
You’ll probably need to talk with your vet about how to dilute the solutions, and how to properly administer it though… I don’t feel comfortable walking you through it, but you can get 1% ivomec at http://www.kvvet.com

Question about demodectic mange?
So, we took my pup to the vet today and found out she has demodectic mange. The vet prescribed Ivermectin, she starts out with a low dose and works up to a higher dose each day. The vet said I’ll start seeing results in about a week, but she said to come back in a month for another skin scraping because sometimes the DM will go away, but come back if not treated long enough. Is this true? Anybody have any experience with DM and Ivermectin?
yes,my dog had DM,she was treated with ivermectin:she is around50lbs,i think i had to start with a higher dose(1ml?)
and went down to 1/2 ml,for a good while:hmm 3months?
yes, do a skin scraping after a month or 6weeks of treatment!
dogs have demodex mites living in the hair follicles, but in a very minimal amount.the dogs own immune system takes care of these mites. Most likely, your puppy went through some stress or illness(that’s how demodex mites take over the body)

sarcoptic mange in humans?
a girl i work with was diagnosed with human sarcoptic mange, different from the dog kind we see at work. i have bathed in pyrethrin, the flea shampoo, but it is also the main ingredient in the medicine they gave her. i am washing my blankets and sheets, and my boyfriend is washing too. i doubt i have this since i don’t actually touch her, but what else can i do to ease my mind?
As you know, sarcoptic mange is basically the same thing as scabies. It is highly contagious. It sounds like you have done everything that you should. I know you are worried, but only time will tell at this point. If you break out in a rash that itches like mad, then you need to treat again. You should not treat youself again for at least two weeks.

Red mange treatment?! PLEASE help!?
We have a 10 week old boxer mix pup that had a rash on his head. We took him to the vet, and they decided that it was red mange. They gave us the meds to dip him in. We brought him home and dipped him yesterday. Today, it looks WORSE! What’s happening? I plan on calling the vet tomorrow, because they aren’t in tonight, because it is so late. PLEASE HELP!
Your vet must not have explained mange to you very well at all. Mange mites damage the hair follicles and all the hair dies and falls out. Just because the mites are killed by the dip doesn’t mean your dog will miraculously be cured. The hair takes quite a bit of time to grow back. Your dog’s hair will continue to fall out and he will look worse until the new hair grows back in.
You really should call your vet and get a good explanation of mange.
